Getting Started in the Antiques Business
Presented by former Club President Bea Coker

Bea related how she got started in the antiques business. She started doing crafts at home in 1978 with the arrival of her infant son. It progressed to "Back Home Antiques". In 1998 it closed due to demographic changes and "10 finger discounts".

Diversification with what you offer for sale is crucial for survival. They kept most everything in stock as antiques, with very few reproductions or newer items. Keeping a customer want list helps increase sales and keeps customers coming back. Sending a thank you note for customers who purchase provides a loyal customer base. Providing lay-a-way purchasing also increases sales. Run special sales to attract new customers. Take advantage of knowing the other dealers in other areas. They can become your personal "pickers". If you are in a mall, push merchandise for all the dealers. The customers will be back and might buy from you next time. Put as much information on your merchandise tags as possible. Most customers do want to know about their antique purchases.
